Guy Fawkes Night, also called Bonfire Night, is celebrated on the 5th of November each year. It remembers the night in 1605 when Guy Fawkes and his men wanted to carry out the Gunpowder Plot to kill King James. The idea was to blow up the House of Lords in London. However, the man was caught and all over England people lit bonfires to celebrate the fact that the king had survived.

The day became a national holiday not long after. One of the traditions that appeared (nobody really knows when) was the burning of a dummy – a ‘Guy’ – on the bonfire. Children would make them and then parade them around their villages asking for a ‘penny for the guy.’ The dummy would be then burnt in the bonfire.

These days, Bonfire Night parties happen all over Great Britain. People organise them both on Guy Fawkes Night itself and on the weekends near the holiday. Firework displays have also become a common way of celebrating this occasion.
